Winter driving in Europe
Motorists planning a trip to Europe this winter may be tempted to stock up on a host of continental bargains. However, many travellers could be in danger of an expensive recovery from their booze cruise if they overload their vehicles, or do not have adequate breakdown cover, warns Green Flag.

Although duty free shopping became obsolete in June 1999, visitors to EU countries are still entitled to bring back goods, without paying UK tax. For example, holidaymakers in France can purchase goods paying only French tax, which can represent excellent savings. However, the goods must be for their own use, and there are limits on the amount that can be imported.

It is natural that shoppers will want to make the most of their allowances, but, by doing this, they could risk over loading their vehicles, making them dangerous to drive. In addition, drivers also need to check with their insurers that they are covered to drive in Europe, and that they have a European breakdown policy, to ensure their cut price cruise doesn't turn into an expensive excursion.
