Ministers have decided to drop proposals which would have made MoT tests less frequent.
The Government had considered making vehicle check-ups every two years in a bid to cut back on red tape, a move which safety campaigners had warned could result in "many more" deaths on UK roads.
However, Transport Secretary Justine Greening has confirmed that MoTs will still be carried out on an annual basis, just like renewing car insurance or
breakdown cover .
A number of potential checks are being considered to increase the quality of MoT services, such as online review sites, improving information held on MoT certificates and the use of mystery shoppers.
Ms Greening said: "I want each motorist to be confident that a visit to the garage ends with their car repaired to a high standard by reputable mechanics rather than uncertainty about cost and the quality of service. Giving drivers the very best information about garage performance is absolutely key to achieving this goal."
