Nissan's new fourth generation Micra compact hatchback has been unveiled by the company's chief Carlos Ghosn at the Geneva Motor Show.

The Japanese company claimed that the new car, built on an all-new V platform, focuses on improved use of space and better efficiency.

The latest Micra, featuring a three-cylinder, supercharged petrol engine and below 100g/km CO2 emission, is going to be sold in 160 countries and manufactured in four different plants.

Initially, a simple engine line-up of three-pot petrol engines will be launched in Europe, followed by the supercharged motor.

The car has a five-speed manual gearbox as the default transmission, while buyers can opt for a CVY auto 'box. Other features include keyless ignition, parking aids and an affordable sat-nav system.

Nissan said that the Micra, which will hit the UK market this autumn, will be well equipped for a car in this class, despite the focus on economy.
