Pupils were forced to stay at home from school and there were collisions on the roads as a result of heavy snow in parts of Scotland.
Temperatures plunged on Thursday night and roads were closed across the Highlands and North East.
There was a three-vehicle accident on the A96 at Alves near Elgin in Moray at about 7.30am on Friday. Three people were taken to Dr Gray's Hospital in Elgin.
Police said one person was seriously injured and two others suffered minor injuries.
Grampian Fire and Rescue crews attended a one car accident at Bridge of Muchalls on the A90 and a two car collision at the Marywell turn off on the same road in Aberdeenshire.
The Met Office issued severe weather warnings for the whole of Scotland.
In Aberdeenshire 28 schools were fully or partially closed.
In the Grampian area the A941 Dufftown to Rhynie road was closed due to drifting snow while the B974 Banchory to Fettercairn route was shut due to heavy snow and in Tayside the A93 was closed at Spittal of Glenshee.
There were many minor road accidents, though no one was injured.
Police urged motorists to drive carefully.
