Everton star Steven Pienaar has been charged with drink driving

Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar has been charged with drink driving following his team's 3-1 win over Manchester United at the weekend.

The 27-year-old South African was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning in Liverpool after failing to comply with a traffic signal. Officers later charged the player with drink driving.

Pienaar, who joined the Toffees from German team Borussia Dortmund in 2007, will appear at Liverpool City Magistrates' Court on March 9, a police spokesman confirmed.

"Merseyside Police can confirm that a 27-year-old man has been charged with drink driving and failure to comply with a traffic sign," the spokesman said.

"He was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning and charged later that day.

"Steven Pienaar from Woolton will appear at Liverpool City Magistrates Court on March 9, 2010."

Everton Football Club have declined to comment on the matter.
