Crackdown on overrunning roadworks

New guidelines to help councils crackdown on overrunning roadworks have been published by the Government

Kent has become the first local authority outside London to introduce a scheme which gives councils the authorisation to crackdown on delayed roadworks.

The Government has published guidelines on a permit scheme, which will help other councils develop their own strategy, to minimise disruption to motorists when roadworks are underway.

Under the scheme, companies must apply for a permit before they start construction work and must agree to stick to terms on timing and road space or face prosecution and a fine of up to £5,000.

Transport minister Sadiq Khan said: "This is just one part of a package of Government measures to reduce the disruption caused by roadworks.

"We also plan to consult on higher financial penalties for companies who allow their roadworks to overrun as well as on lane rental charges for firms operating on the most traffic sensitive routes."

A scheme similar to Kent County Council's began in the capital, managed by Transport for London and 16 London boroughs, on January 11.
