Ban for behind the wheel dog walker

A motorist who walked his dog while driving his car has lost his licence

A jobless motorist has been banned from driving after he was caught walking his dog from behind the wheel.

Paul Railton dragged his pet lurcher alongside his Nissan Navara by dangling its lead from the vehicle's window while driving slowly down a country lane.

A cyclist noticed that the dog was being pulled along Stonyheap Lane, near Consett, on December 4 and alerted the police.

Railton, 23, of County Durham, pleaded guilty to not being in proper control of a vehicle at Consett Magistrates' Court. He had three points added to the nine already clocked-up on his licence - leading to a six-month driving ban.

Sharon Lowrie, prosecuting, said: "The driver was hanging onto the dog's lead through the driver window, approaching a blind summit."

Railton, charged at home five days after the incident, was also fined £66 and ordered to pay £43 costs and a legal surcharge of £15.
