'No excuses' for shoddy driving

Police in Dorset have caught a woman driving to a garage with a faulty car bonnet almost entirely covering her windscreen.

The 53-year-old was driving along the road in Weymouth with just a narrow gap to see where she was going, her view almost entirely obstructed by a broken bonnet that had popped up.

Ironically, the woman was caught by officers out in force to promote the No Excuses campaign, a programme designed to educate bad drivers and cut road deaths.

In all, a total of 30 offences were logged that day. Among the most serious was a driver steering with his elbows while he rolled a cigarette, another who was reading from a clipboard while driving and a further six who were caught using mobile phones while in control of a vehicle.

Other transgressions included speeding, not wearing seatbelts and failing to stop for a pedestrian crossing.
