Drive with care in worst storm of the winter

Green Flag, the breakdown cover expert, is today warning motorists of the dangers of driving in hazardous conditions in what is being hailed as the worst storm of the winter. Bad weather has already caused many roads to flood and areas such as London, the South, Wales, East and West England, are on high alert. The winds have also caused dangers on the road with trees and other debris falling into the path of cars.

Dan Robinson, Head of Green Flag says, "If you do have to travel in these extreme conditions allow yourself plenty of time. The airports have cancelled selected flights and bridges and ferry services are closed causing additional traffic on the roads. Check before you leave for your journey to see if any roads have been closed and stay alert and vigilant throughout your drive."

  • Frequently check that all lights are working – headlights, indicators, fog lights and hazard lights - so that other drivers can see you
  • Check your wiper blades are in good condition and that the washer bottle is topped up for all round good visibility
  • Leave more space between you and the car in front as stopping distances may be increased by slippery roads
  • During stormy weather, brake gently to avoid skidding
  • Allow more time for your journey during bad weather as you'll need to drive more slowly
  • Take a fully charged mobile phone with you in case you break down but keep it switched off while you're driving.
