Winter driving in Europe

If you’re planning a trip to Europe this winter, you’ll probably be tempted to stock up on all sorts of continental bargains. But be careful. Many travellers could be in danger of an expensive recovery from their booze cruise if they overload their vehicles, or don’t have adequate breakdown cover.

Although duty free shopping became obsolete in June 1999, visitors to EU countries are still entitled to bring back goods without paying UK tax. For example, holidaymakers in France pay only French tax on their purchases, which can represent excellent savings. However, the goods must be for your own use, and there are limits on the amount that can be imported.

It’s natural to want to make the most of your allowances. But this could mean you risk over loading your vehicle, making it dangerous to drive. You also need to check with your insurers that you are covered to drive in Europe, and have a European breakdown policy, to ensure your cut price cruise doesn't turn into an expensive excursion.
