Take cover

There is nothing worse than having a vehicle breakdown in a foreign country and feeling stranded - especially when you are not able to speak the language.

With the right European breakdown cover, drivers can make sure that if the unexpected did happen, they would still be able to make it to their destination or find their way home.

Green Flag has a dedicated team of multi-lingual telephone operators who customers can speak to on a free phone number from most countries in Europe, when they need speedy breakdown assistance. We can also arrange International Driving Permits and discounted ferry and Eurotunnel tickets.

Green Flag European motoring assistance also covers any repatriation costs if the vehicle cannot be repaired abroad, which otherwise could turn the trip into an expensive nightmare.

In France, without cover there would be a call out charge of up to 87 Euros (£59)* plus nearly one pound (1.29 Euros) per kilometre. So if you broke down in St Tropez and lived in Manchester it could cost £1,488 (2,183 Euros) to get your car back home. A simple call out to change a tyre in Spain could cost as much as 55 Euros (£37).

Plan that route

Free online route finders are a handy way of working out your directions before leaving. Forward thinking also eliminates the need for trawling through maps, which can be time-consuming and distracting. Green Flag's free online route planner can provide door-to-door directions to anywhere in Europe. Click here for details.

At your service

Make sure your car has been recently serviced and is up to the trip (driving to the South of France and back for a fortnight's holiday can rack up 2,000 miles). Carry out essential checks on your vehicle before you set off. Oil, tyres, petrol, battery and water are top causes of breakdowns and easily checked.

Be legal

Make sure your vehicle is legal for the countries you are going to be travelling in. You will need headlamp deflector strips and it is also advisable to carry a warning triangle for use in the case of a breakdown. For a full list of legal requirements go to Green Flag's country-by-country guide to the Continent's roads. (LINK to country by country guide)

Insurance

International motor insurance, or a Green Card, is no longer compulsory for driving in Europe but third party insurance is. It is important to remember to carry your insurance certificate, vehicle registration document and a current tax disc, and also ensure your insurance company is informed of the dates of your trip.

Exchange rate at the time of writing = 1.47 Euros to the pound.
