Don't take risks
Traffic police, speed cameras and penalties are there to protect us, so we can use our roads free from fear. Respect them.
You may think the chances of disqualification from driving, a fine, or imprisonment are unlikely for a traffic offence. Not so. Courts are recognising the horrors of death on the road and the dangers posed by bad drivers. They are increasingly handing out tough punishments.
If you kill someone
By driving dangerously you can face 14 years in prison. It is also possible to be charged with manslaughter, which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment, an unlimited fine and disqualification.
If you drive dangerously
You can be given an unlimited fine, up to two years in prison, and be disqualified.
If you drive carelessly
You can be fined £2,500 and disqualified.
If you use a defective vehicle
With bald tyres, worn brakes, broken lights or other defect, you can be fined. A bald tyre carries a fine of £2,500. If your defective vehicle kills someone, you can be jailed.
If you run a business
You have a duty to ensure any vehicles you use are safe and drivers are careful. If one of your vehicles kills someone because it was defective or driven dangerously, you can be jailed.
