Improve your driving skills
It's worth it. More training could save your life.
Passing a driving test is only the first step towards learning to drive safely. Many people go on to learn bad habits and forget what they were taught. It is possible to get further training to ensure you are driving safely, but most people don't even know this exists. Here's how...
Just passed?
Take Pass Plus - a course for newly qualified drivers. It includes driving on motorways and at night. Call the hotline on 0115 936 6666.
Experienced?
Hire an approved driving instructor (ADI) to assess you. ADIs are listed in the Yellow Pages. Some offer an advanced "test". You can also call the Driving Instructors Association (tel: 020 8665 5151) for information.
Alternatively, get your driving assessed by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (tel: 020 8996 9601) or the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (tel: 0121 248 2000).
Drive for work?
If you drive a car, van, bus or lorry as part of your job, ask your employer to pay for further training. They can call the Driving Standards Agency (tel: 0300 200 1122) for information about trainers. Your employer has a legal duty to ensure you are safe on the road.
Brake provides free training for company representatives on delivering awareness-raising presentations to groups of drivers. You can find further information on this and other training offered by Brake on their website.
Test yourself?
Pick up a copy of the Highway Code at your local bookshop or Post Office. Test your family and friends. The Highway Code is updated regularly and may contain information you didn't know.
