How to prepare your car for winter
Winter affects more than energy bills and wardrobes; automobiles also feel its effects. By performing a few simple maintenance checks before and during winter, you can reduce the risk of an accident while keeping your car in good working order during the colder months.
The first place to start is under the bonnet. Ensure that you change your car's oil regularly, especially if your car is midway between services. Ensure that the oil has the right viscosity for your vehicle and remember that oil tends to get thicker during colder months. The thicker oil, the less effectively it will lubricate your engine.
When last did you check your battery's connections and water level? Having a corrosion free battery during winter is vital. If your battery is more than three years old it is advised that you check its ability to hold a charge before winter, rather than having to settle for jump starts during the cold months.
Your car's antifreeze mixture needs to be at the correct level to help ensure reliability. Aim for a 50-50 mix of antifreeze and water in your radiator. Get your antifreeze mixture tested by your local engineer or purchase an antifreeze tester. If your mixture is not adequate, it is vital that it is drained entirely and refilled correctly. Remember that antifreeze cannot be disposed of by pouring it down the drain.
Low visibility is a major cause of road accidents in winter which is why it is wise to replace your vehicle's windshield wiper blades before winter. It is also wise to fill up windshield washer reservoirs with washer fluid before taking to the roads this winter. Visibility through the windshield also depends largely on the proper functioning of your vehicle's defroster and heater.
While it may not be necessary to change to snow tyres, ensure that your tyre pressure is at an adequate level. Tyres that are properly inflated will help ensure the best possible traction, which can be jeopardised in wet and snowy conditions.
Ensure your car is in peak condition to face the cold roads and get adequate breakdown cover. Request a free online quote from Green Flag today for peace of mind.
